My Overly Ambitious October Reading Plans (featuring my first attempt at a structured TBR and all the readathons/readalongs!)

As you all know, I’m a huge mood reader, and never ever post TBRs. So you’re probably thinking, why is she posting a TBR (of sorts) this month? I have a lot of grand reading plans for October, and very little of which is going to get read. I’m actually incredibly excited about October, and all the books I hope to read, most of which I’m really excited about.

For the entire month of October, I’m going to be participating in Spookathon and Friday Fright A Thon, and I’m going to be trying out a structured TBR. I hope October goes well reading wise even though I’ve read like 2 books I can still read a lot it’s fine. But you know what? Let’s try to be optimistic, and without further ado, here are my overly ambitious reading plans!

Structured TBR

However, through completing various readathons with challenges, I find that I thrive with completing challenges/categories because it gives me some structure in what I read but also gives me some flexibility to switch things up. These readathons showed me that I could read successfully with some structure without falling into a reading slump. Additionally, I have always liked the concept of a TBR, so this allows me to have the satisfaction of ticking things off if you will.

Basically, when I read Jamison @ Jami Shelves ‘s post on her structured TBR, I thought it was something that could work well for me. I mean, really, really well. Essentially, what this is is that I will have a set number of categories that I will provide some options for, and will have 2-3 books within that category. The goal is to read at least one book in order to tick off the category. Ultimately, the main goal is to tick off as many categories as possible. Many of these fit into multiple categories, but I would like to try to have one book fit one category.

Note: This month, I would also really like to begin to get to In Custody by Anita Desai. This is actually my final text for my IGCSE Literature Course and I would like to get a jump start on the class.

The categories:

This month, the categories I have set for myself are:

  • Mystery/Thriller (it’s October)
  • Owned TBR
  • Backlist
  • Classic
  • Anticipated Release (from my own personal list)
  • Audiobook
  • New Release (not from my anticipated release list)
  • Random (a book or two of my choice)

At the time of writing this post, I am getting ready for Spookathon, hosted by the wonderful BooksandLala (my favorite Booktuber ever), Shannon over at Bookerly, and Peter at Peter Likes Books. Throughout the month, I am also participating in the #FridayFrightAThon, hosted by Melanie @ MeltotheAny, Amy @ A Court of Crowns and Quills, Jen @ Pinot and Pages and Chelsea @ Chelsea Palmer!

Pretty much all the books that I’m reading for the Spookathon are books from my own structured TBR and Friday Fright A Thon. Honestly, this TBR is just me trying to fit as many titles from those into the challenges, except for the group book (Toil and Trouble edited by Tess Sharpe). I have multiple options for each challenge so I have that flexibility. Also, many of these books fit into multiple categories. So, let’s dive into it, shall we?

(1) Read a thriller

  • The Death of Mrs Westaway by Ruth Ware
  • If We Were Villains by M.L Rio
  • Six Stories by Matt Wesolowski

(2) Read a book with purple on the cover

  • Toil and Trouble edited by Tess Sharpe and Jessica Spotswood
  • Six Stories by Matt Wesolowski

(3) Read a book not set in the current time period

  • Toil and Trouble edited by Tess Sharpe and Jessica Spotswood
  • If We Were Villains by M.L Rio

(4) Read a book with a spooky word in the title

  • Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare
  • Toil and Trouble edited by Tess Sharpe and Jessica Spotswood

(5) Read a book with pictures

Friday Fright A Thon

For #FridayFrightAThon, I will be reading the Death of Mrs. Westaway by Ruth Ware (running from October 12th-17th) and If We Were Villains by M.L Rio (October 19th-24th). I am still going back on forth on joining in with the read-along for the last book in that line-up, the Last Time I Lied by Riley Sager because I have very little interest in this book in the first place. The second term of school will also be starting back up and will be in full swing very quickly. Do tell me whether you think it will be worth it though!

So, what books are you reading in October? Any releases you are anticipated? Which readathons/readalongs are you participating in? Wish me luck on my ridiculously ambitious reading plans (I’ll need it, send help).
