My Very Late Mid Year Book Freak Out Tag – some stats, and lots of books!

It’s July, and we are somehow more than halfway through the year!

How.

This is one of my favourite posts to write every year, and I was just about to write this post when I saw that the lovely Caitlin @ Caitlin Althea tagged me to do this. So thank you so much, Caitlin!

I really emphasize on not including rereads in here, but sometimes you just have to.

So, let’s talk about the books I have read in the first half of this year!

A Brief Reading Overview Of The Year Thus Far:

Here are some at-a-glance reading stat graphics for my 2019 reading for the first half of the year!

Best Book Of The Year (Thus Far)

Image result for darius the great is not okay

Without a doubt, the best book I have read so far this year is Darius the Great Is Not Okay by Adib Khorram. I know regular readers of this blog will be able to call this answer, but there are so many reasons to love this book. It is poignant, gorgeous, heartbreaking and a literary masterpiece. It is a story that I will forever recommend, and it is just phenomenal.

Read my review here.

Honorable mentions: Summer Bird Blue by Akemi Dawn Bowman, Spin the Dawn by Elizabeth Lim, Love from A to Z by S.K Ali.

Best Sequel You’ve Read So Far This Year

Image result for in an absent dream

If I had to pick, I’d say In An Absent Dream by Seanan McGuire. So far this year, I have been surprisingly good at reading sequels (probably because of all the Grisha reading I did), but they haven’t been hits. I have enjoyed the Wayward Children series in the past (even though the first book hasn’t held up that well for me), and this was a very magical yet heartbreaking read. It’s really great, and that cover is 😍

New Release You Haven’t Read But Want To?

Image result for hungry hearts elsie chapman

Right now, I’m dying to read Hungry Hearts edited by Elsie Chapman and Caroline Tung Richmond. It came out in June, and it’s been on my must read TBR for much longer than that. I have a feeling that I’m going to love it, and the only reason I haven’t read is because I want a physical copy to read (it’s pretty, okay? Let me live with my shallow self).

Most Anticipated Release of the Second Half of the Year?

Image result for girls of storm and shadowImage result for ninth houseImage result for maybe this time by kasie west

Frankly, I don’t have that many books I’m really anticipating, but the ones I am really anticipating are some of my most anticipated reads ever. My holy trinity of anticipated releases for the second half of the year are Girls of Storm and Shadow by Natasha Ngan, Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo and Maybe This Time by Kasie West.

I need to stop procrastinating and being a coward so I can request an ARC of Girls. Why am I like this. Ninth House sounds exactly like my kind of book and is set in one of my dream universities (yes, I’m that person), and Maybe This Time comes out so soon. I’m so excited I’m going to scream!!

Biggest Disappointment?

Image result for fake it till you break it

I would say me, but we’re talking about books, so.

But for real though, it was Fake It Til You Break It by Jenn P. Nguyen. This had EVERYTHING I ever wanted in a book: an Asian fake-dating rom-com with persistent mothers? Yes. But this ended up having some cheating that I was not on-board with, extremely juvenile writing/character voice, and I thought Mia was a bit of a try-hard character. Truly a pity. I am SO sad, you all have no idea.

Biggest Surprise?

Image result for royals rachel hawkins

Most definitely Royals (or also known as Prince Charming) by Rachel Hawkins. This was a book that I had taken off my TBR, and I only read it in order to prepare for the release of its sequel Her Royal Highness, which everyone and their mother loved. But Royals was so good! It was the perfect fluffy read, with a very cute romance, a fun setting and a fairly likeable heroine. I went into it expecting not to like it at all, and came out really liking it.

Favourite New Author?

Image result for darius the great is not okayImage result for spin the dawn by elizabeth lim

This is probably a tie between Adib Khorram and Elizabeth Lim. I am incapable of shutting up about how much I loved Darius (evidence in point, my very first answer to this tag), and I also loved the first Elizabeth Lim novel, Spin the Dawn. I fell so deeply in love with the magicalness of Lim’s prose and the story as a whole. I can’t wait to check out their new works.

Newest Favourite Character?

Image result for you asked for perfectImage result for spin the dawn by elizabeth limImage result for siege and stormImage result for love from a to z

While I haven’t found some all-time favourite characters, I found so many characters that I really enjoyed. These include Ariel from You Asked For Perfect (due to how relatable he was and how deeply I could empathize with him), Maia from Spin the Dawn (because she was an awesome likeable Asian female character with a spine, was fully fleshed out and something else I can’t place my finger on), Nikolai from the Grishaverse (Sturmhond and his sassiness saved the train wreck of Siege and Storm) and Adam and Zayneb from Love from A to Z (we love soft, sweet boys and spunky, headstrong, angry girls).

Book That Made You Cry?

Image result for darius the great is not okay

The only book that has fully made me cry and sob this year was Darius the Great Is Not Okay. I was an absolute mess at the end, and this made me feel so deeply. I will love this book forever and always. I have had books that nearly made me cry, made me deeply sad or pushed me to the verge of tears.

Honourable Mentions: You Asked For Perfect by Laura Silverman, Summer Bird Blue by Akemi Dawn Bowman, and Anger Is A Gift by Mark Oshiro.

A Book That Made You Happy?

Image result for always never yours

I know that I’m trying not to include rereads here, but I really had to answer Always Never Yours by Emily Wibberley and Austin Siegemund-Broka. This made me the most happy, with me chuckling and grinning like an idiot COUNTLESS times.

I also can’t not talk about Red, White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston, which is likely the most hyped 2019 release. This had me laughing, chuckling and grinning so many times, especially in the first quarter. I could literally not stop grinning for the first 10%. Truly a hilarious, heartwarming and just plain funny book.

Honourable Mentions: Famous In A Small Town by Emma Mills, The Red Scrolls of Magic by Cassandra Clare and Wesley Chu.

Favourite Book to Movie Adaptation You’ve Seen This Year?

Image result for five feet apart

The only one I have watched (that I can remember) this year was Five Feet Apart, which I suppose is my default answer. I wasn’t completely swayed by it and I didn’t love it as much as other people have.

I’m woefully behind on book-to-movie adaptations. I haven’t watched The Hate U Give, (please don’t come for me), and I also need to watch The Sun Is Also A Star.

This summer.

I will watch them.

Favourite Review You’ve Written This Year?

Image result for the dark artifices

10000% my Queen of Air and Darkness Review. I feel like I really broke down my thoughts well and fairly eloquently, but imo my full reviews were pretty solid this year. But I am definitely the most proud of that review. That is probably the peak of my reviewing abilities, welp.

(Yes, I read this in 2018, and no, I’m using this as an answer because I love that review so much).

Most Beautiful Book You’ve Bought This Year?

Image result for the red scrolls of magic waterstones

The Waterstones Rune edition of The Red Scrolls of Magic by Cassandra Clare and Wesley Chu.

Yes, I only bought 3 books this year. But LOOK AT IT. It’s gorgeous. And I love it.

What Books Do You Need To Read By The End of the Year?

So so many, honestly! These include Finale by Stephanie Garber, Hungry Hearts edited by Elsie Chapman, Two Dark Reigns by Kendare Blake, Empress of All Seasons by Emiko Jean, My Plain Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton and Jodi Meadows, as well as classics as a whole, if we’re being real here.

Also, everything from my anticipated releases list, my Goodreads TBR and from my shelves.

‘Twas the eternal struggle of a reader.

  1. Awesome post !!! I’m yet to read Darius but glad to know you loved it… And Hungry Hearts was just amazing, so I can’t wait for you to experience it too 😍😍

  2. Loved this tag! One of my faves to read & write, although I haven’t done it this year due to a slump ://
Love From A to Z sounds so so good, I really need to read it. The cover is also super cute – love the airport setting.
I have yet to read a Kasie West book but I so need to as they sound right up my alley – which one should I start with?!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Ahh thank you Emme! I’m so sorry to hear about your slump, they’re the worst. I hope you love Love from A to Z because it truly is phenomenal and has so many things for you to enjoy. I love the cover too omg. I haven’t read many Kasie Wests yet (I’ve read her more modern books), but it depends on what key concept in each book intrigues you the most! if you like friends-to-lovers featuring a summer bucket list of sorts (think since you’ve been gone), you should try love, life and the list! if you like podcasts and sleeping in seattle, try listen to your heart! if you’re obsessed with fake famous people, movie sets & tutor-student relationships, fate, fame & the first kiss is for you! maybe this time (which i recently read) is great if you love reading about events, hate-to-love relationships and/or a small town atmosphere! sorry for my long reply, but i hope it helps! you should defo check out west’s GR page for more details :)) happiest of reading!

    1. This tag really is fun, isn’t it? Honestly, one of my bookish missions is to make everyone read darius the great is not okay, haha! I hope you love it if you pick it up 😊 I’m so excited for the fall releases too! There really are some great ones on its way!

  4. Loved this! I agree – Nikolai is so important and the ONLY good thing in Siege and Storm. And I am so glad you enjoyed Prince Charming – I have it on my TBR and I am so glad you had positive feelings about it. I also cannot wait to get to Darius the Great is Not Okay! Hope the rest of your reading year is fantastic!

    1. Nikolai being the only good thing in Siege & Storm is the Truth and I honestly can’t see any other way! I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on Prince Charming & Darius! Thank you for your kind words, Marija, and I hope the rest of your reading year is great too!

  5. i just remembered now that you mentioned five feet apart, but i actually have watched this one, so i could’ve had that as my answer, opposed to me gushing about the maze runner for the 400th time, lol. i also thought it was just okay and i have not read the book, but it did make me emotional during a few scenes and i do appreciate the overall message, although a bit cliché.
and ofc there’s also the ninth house coming out this year! i don’t know whether or not to be excited, because it’s said to be very dark (even darker than the six of crows duology), so perhaps i won’t even be able to read it, since i do have some personal triggers for content i’m not comfortable with reading. but i guess i’ll only know once the book it’s already out! but hopefully it will live up to everyone’s anticipation, since i know king of scars was kind of a hit or miss for many people.
    great tag, taasia!

    1. lmao you’re fine, i completely forgot about watching five feet apart haha until i wrote up this tag 😂 i’m really excited for ninth house as well but i totally understand if you aren’t comfortable with picking it up. thank you, lais! you’re truly too kind ❤

I hope I can soon, I really can't wait to fall in love with it ❤ ❤ and Prince Charming, ahh it's the second time I am seeing this book tonight and… I guess, it's a sign. I need to read it ahh. It sounds like the kind of read I'd love 🙂
    Happy reading!! ❤ ❤

  7. You are NOT a disappointment, take it back. You’re doing amazing!
I bought Always Never Yours, after If I’m being Honest was recommended so many times, and the reviews being incredible. I simply wanted to start at their first novel, and I really should read it this year (along with so many other books haha). I also just read Prince Charming (Royals) and while I gave it 3 stars because it was lacking a little something, it was still very sweet and an enjoyable read! I’m now ready for Her Royal Highness ♥

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Ah thank you so much, Noémie! You’re the sweetest ❤ I cannot wait for you to read ANY and IIBH, and to hear your thoughts on them! They’re truly delightful. I’m glad that you enjoyed Prince Charming and I hope you enjoy Her Royal Highness! They were great reads 😊

  8. Oh my, so many great books here! Granted, I haven’t read half of them but I actually feel like I have based on all the hyped they get hahaha
I really enjoyed Empress of All Seasons but wasn’t a favourite, unfortunately. There were just some things that didn’t make it past a 3.5 for me. However, if you like Japanese folklore and feminist vibes, you’re in for a treat!
I can’t wait to read Ninth House and Spin the Dawn! I also added most of these cute contemporaries romances to my summer TBR (because I always want cute contemporaries romances in summer).
    Thanks for sharing, Taasia! 🙂

    1. Hahahah that actually kind of makes sense? I can’t explain it but I get that 😂 I’m glad you enjoyed Empress of All Seasons but I’m sorry to hear that it wasn’t a favourite! I hope I really like it 😊 I hope you love Ninth House & Spin the Dawn, as well as all the cute contemporary romances! Happiest of reading, Sophie!

And I’m so glad that you actually wanted to do it because I wasn’t sure if you wanted to be tagged or not :”) OMG I HAVE TO READ DARIUS BY THE END OF THE YEAR. you’re selling it to me so well and you can feel free to slap me or something if I don’t read it in 2019! Hungry Hearts sounds like the perfect anthology, & I can’t wait to devour (wink wink) it when I can! And I really need to read Always Never Yours and this writing duo’s work as well because all of their book covers are so cute and I’ve heard such great things about their works!

  13. I also really want to get to Finale before the year is over (let’s hope it actually happens, lol). I’m also so excited for Ninth House to come out–it seems like it’s going to be such a fantastically dark story. And I loved Maia’s character in Spin the Dawn, but I think Edan was my real fav tbh *winks*

    1. OMG SAME. It’s on my August TBR, and I’m just so bad at creating motivation for me to pick it up? *sighs* Why am I like this? I’m truly dying for a copy of Ninth House, and the reviews have been good so far! I really liked Edam & Maia (but Maia more imo) but Edan is also a real gem, so
