August Reading Plans: Ft. A Traditional TBR (Who Am I?) & Me Failing My July TBR (but honestly, what’s new?)

So yes, TBRs (and exposing my inability are still a thing here.

I don’t know how well I’m going to do on my August TBR, considering the busyness of August. I’m following a traditional (ish?) TBR, which is going to be … interesting.

I’m going to make my emoji key (for my August TBR) a bit more intricate! I’m separating my TBR into priority and other titles. As for monthly TBR challenges, I’m going to be participating in Avid August, hosted by the Devour Your TBR Group on Goodreads, where you focus on reading books that you didn’t get around to on your previous TBRs!

Also, I forgot to mention this on my wrap up, but I’m going overseas from the 2nd of August (today!) to the 12th of August ish? I’m doing my best to have posts scheduled, but I’m going to be even worse at interacting and returning comments!

And yes, I failed my July TBR. Truly, is anyone surprised?

I have an anticipated releases of the second half of the year coming up (albeit very late due to the sheer amount of content I have planned) that will go into more detailed about these titles, so stay tuned for that!

(And yes, all of these have already come out. Please bear with me and my lateness, yikes).

  4. We Hunt The Flame by Hafsah Faizal
  5. Alex, Approximately by Jenn Bennett

These are books that I already have read and loved, and are books that I borrowed out from the library for a reread. It would be cool to reread these, but I’ll only do it if I’m in the mood for them. If I don’t get to these, I won’t exactly cry about it.

  • Hungry Hearts edited by Elsie Chapman & Caroline Tung Richmond ⭐✨☀️📖🌍 (AA)
    • This is one of my most anticipated releases of the year, and sounds like everything I need and want in my life. Like, an interconnected, diverse, YA amthology about food and culture? Sounds like an automatic 5 star read. Also, this was one of three physical books that I borrowed and need to return before I leave to Bangkok, which makes this even more of a priority!
  • Maid by Stephanie Land ⭐📖🎧
    • This is apparently, required reading for me before I start at my new school! I know about three things about it, so this will be interesting 👀
  • Natalie Tan’s Book of Luck and Fortune by Roselle Lim ☀️✨📖🌍
    • I did a Try A Chapter, Year of the Asian challenge edition on Twitter in July and this is one of the books I haven’t read from that list yet! This seems to give me the Astonishing Colour of After vibes, which is a book I reLly enjoyed! Plus, I just got it from my library so I really need to read it ASAP.
  • The Diviners by Libba Bray ☀️🌸🎧🤗💨📖🎧
    • Even though I have already read this quite a few years back, I’m solely rereading this to readalong with the Diviners Readalong, hosted by the lovelies Melanie @ meltotheany, Chelsea @chelseadollingreads, Madalyn @novelink, and Jane @itsjanelindsey! You can find all the information for the readalong here.
  • We Hunt the Flame by Hafsah Faizal ⭐☀️🤗✨📖🌍 (AA)
    • This was on my July TBR, and I never really got super into it, sadly? I’m highkey struggling with it and it’s not fun. But I still hope I really enjoy it! Buddy read with the sweetest aka Caitlin @ Caitlin Althea!
  • Hunting Prince Dracula by Kerri Maniscalco ☀️🤗💨📖 (AA)
    • So here’s something embarassing: I was meant to read this last month for #Stalkathon hosted by Destiny @ Howling Libraries, but it didn’t happen for some reason? I’m dumb lmao, love that for me!!1!1! If you don’t think I’m not gonna be An overachiever and play catch-up, you’re wrong uwu.
  • The Vanishing Stair by Maureen Johnson ⭐🏳️‍🌈🌸✨📖 (AA)
    • Though I was admittedly not the biggest fan of Truly Devious, I have heard sone great things about this one and it is on my anticipated releases list of 2019! It is the second physical book that I have to read & return before the move.
  • Aurora Rising by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff ⭐✨📖 (AA)
    • Admittedly, I am a little apprehensive of this one due to so many trusted reviewers not liking it, but hopefully I can be the unpopular opinion here? I truly have no idea where my opinion will fall. This is the third physical library book that I need to read ASAP, which makes it more of a priority!
  • Finale by Stephanie Garber ✨ (AA)
    • I seriously need to read this one. I just bought it in July, and being invested in this series from a very early time, I just need to read this concluding novel. Also, I feel that everyone has read it except me? Now, to find some motivation!
  • Alex, Approximately by Jenn Bennett 💨📖 (AA)
    • I do really need to read some Jenn Bennett novels and this sounds like so much fun! This has been on my TBR for some time, and it seems like the perfect summery read. Also, if you didn’t know, I’m a complete sucker for the classic rom-coms, so.

  • Hello Girls by Brittany Cavallaro and Emily Henry 🏷️🌸
    • This has been (well, so far anyway( the only Augusy 2019 release that I’m interested in!) I have enjoyed works from both of these authors & am interested to see how their writing would blend together. And of course, that premise sounds incredibly intriguing.
  • Nevernight by Jay Kristoff 🏳️‍🌈💨📖🎧
    • I don’t know why, but I’ve suddenly been in the mood to read this? (I blame the community as a whole but mostly Laura and our bookshopping trip. This is all your fault, Laura). I am worried about the violence/goriness here, but if I becone good with that, I’ll definitely give this a fair shot!
  • The Hating Game by Sally Thorne 💨📖🎧
    • I do want to branch out and dip my toes into adult romance (to change up what I read) and this seems a great fit for that! Yes, I’m jumping on the hype train late, but better late than never?
  • The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren ☀️✨📖🎧
    • Ditto about the adult romance part. I heard lots of good things about this one, and it seems like another good summer romance novel!
  • Coming Up For Air by Miranda Kenneally 💨📖🎧
    • Hello? High school swimming? Sports romancd? A world that I know well? Overachievers? This book sounds like my kind of book.
  • Escaping from Houdini by Kerri Maniscalco ☀️🤗💨📖
    • Back to the point about catching up with #Stalkathon! If I’m really into Hunting Prince Dracula upon finishing it, I just figured I’d get this to go . We stan beibg overprepared!

Do you do TBRs? If so, how did you do on your TBR last month? What are some of your most anticipated releases for this month, and some books that you are dying to get to in July?

I would love to know!

  1. Oh my, this is such an excited TBR!! And I hope you have a ton of fun on your trip overseas! I’m horrendous at sticking to TBRs, so don’t worry, you’re not alone, Taasia! Haha! I am so happy that you’re going to be reading Alex Approximately!!! It is the BEST contemporary ever, so I will cry if you don’t adore it. I need to read Finale this month too! I’d be down for a buddy read if you’re interested!
    Happy reading, love! ❤

    1. Ahhh thank you! You are truly too kind 💕 I feel kind if relieved to hear that I’m not the only one who isn’t great at sticking to TBRs! I’m reading Alex, Approximately within the next 2 weeks and I really hope I love it! I’m even more excited to read it upon seeing how much you love it. I would totally love to do a buddy read with you for Finale! I haven’t been motivated to pick it up in the last few months so this would be great! Happy reading to you too! ❤️

  2. cant wait to hear your thoughts on aurora rising bc i thought it was a Mess and a half but I HOPE YOU ENJOY IT. alex approximately is SO CUTE, its really the cuteness you need, basically any retelling of ‘you’ve got mail’ gets an instant 5 stars from me, its just facts.

    1. Honestly, I’m trying to get through Aurora Rising and it’s a slog :((( I’m going to try & audiobook it but while it’s kinda funny, it’s also too much :/ like pls calm down. Alex approximately is so cute but also so much darker than i expected, which threw me in for SUCH a loop. I need to watch You’ve Got Mail ASAP especially since I LOVED Sleepless in Seattle so much! Thank you so much May! You are precious and ily 💘 hope you had an amazing august!

  3. No YOU’RE the sweetest 😭💕 also, you can take your time with WHTF! I’m not making progress on it as well because I’m reading, like, 3 other books and swamped with school 🙃 also you have to tell me how Nevernight and The Hating Game because I feel the exact same way about starting them! I hope you have a wonderful August 💙

    1. Caitlin, you’re the sweetest, and that’s facts!!!1!1!1! I’ve barely touched WHTF which is KILLING me a little but I’m going to find the audio of it so I can continue with it in September! I hope school is going great so far 💕 I haven’t gotten to NN & THG yet, but I really want to! Hope you had a wonderful August, and happiest of reading! 💖

  4. It’s always better late than never to board the hype train!! I must say, The Hating Game and Nevernight are two of my favourite reads (and it doesn’t hurt that both of the authors are fellow Aussie’s). Although, they are very different!! And yet, also have weird similarities… I hope that if you get to them you enjoy them! (I’m also here if you want to talk about content warnings for either!! I’ll be doing a reread of Nevernight this month.)

    1. So happy that you loved THG and NN, and yay for supporting Aussie authors! I haven’t got to them yet, but I really want to soon! Might take a little longer to get to NN because it is really gruesome (which ny delicate self can’t really deal with rn) but hopefully I love it if I do! Happy rereading, Meeghan!
