#AmCurrently: I’m Back (!!!) ft. what I’ve been up to + exciting things

Hi … I’m back!

That was probably very anti-climatic, but yeah, I’m back from an, uh, nearly three months (unplanned) hiatus?

Before I talk about the post itself, I just wanted to thank you all. Thanks for sticking me through this, and for … all the love, comments, follows, likes and just everything. For some reason, I got a bunch of love during my hiatus and like … I seriously don’t deserve you all. Love you all so so much ❤

Even though I am (really) not a very interesting person, I thought it might be cool to do this! I wanted to catch you all up with what’s happening with me, since I basically ghosted this page.

Instead of following my traditional monthly wrap up formats, I wanted to try something new, since I found the old format of my monthly wrap ups to be stiff and all (please ignore the featured image). Let’s see how this works out.

I’ve essentially been in quarantine/social distancing since February, effectively, so we’re going to talk about that.

Side Note: I am actually so behind with blogging, especially comments, so I’m going to try and get to them over the past few months! Also, feel free to drop links and all, because I also do want to find new blogs.

I’m not going to be talking about books I read in hiatus in an upcoming post, since this post is already too long as it is, so keep a look out for that, I guess?

AM CURRENTLY … IN ONLINE SCHOOL/QUARANTINE

March:

So like most of the world, I’ve been in online school since February, and it is not a vibe at all.

… Like, really not the one.

I talked about it in my February wrap up, but I was basically barred from entering school after half-term because of Thai health ministry restrictions, and while those ended up being lifted, I ended up going to school for a total of one (yes, ONE) day before school shut in mid-March (which was spoiler, the last day of school).

We love to see it!

I also ended up dropping A Level Drama (!!!) so I’m down to my three favourite A Levels (English Literature, History and Psychology), and honestly, it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made? I’m so happy I can just focus on the three subjects I love because Drama is not for me and I was starting to hate it a little, not gonna lie.

And after school closed in mid-March, I ended up staying with one of my closest friends in Thailand for like two weeks, which was so much fun? (If she sees this, just wanna say I love you so so much and you are truly a lifesaver <3).

Like a lot of people, my final external summer AS Level exams got cancelled! Which is a good and bad thing, I suppose? <small>No more AS history!!</small>. But due to some announcements from the exam board and my school, my AS grades this summer won’t count anyways, which means I have to re-take English and Psychology anyways during college application season. So, that will be fun.

…. hahaha ….

April/May

I’m linking April and May because they basically blurred together (like quarantine – my life is not that interesting, anyhow).

At the beginning of April, however, I did end up returning to Singapore because it seemed like that school wasn’t going to re-open for a while. Due to a government policy in Singapore (since I was flying in from an ASEAN country), I had to be quarantined at home for 14 days. And it was fine? Yes, it wasn’t amazing, by any stretch of the imagination, but it ended up being better than I thought it was going to be. During this time, Singapore also announced it was going into lockdown, so that was HEAPS of fun!

(And no, I do not have corona).

Around mid-April, school started up again, but since school was still closed (and I couldn’t leave the country anyways) I’ve still been online schooling since then … which is fine, I guess? I do know that I adapted to it a lot better than other people, and have used work as a coping mechanism from quarantine.

I don’t know whether it’s just me, but I’ve literally been calling friends a lot? While I do have a group of friends that I call basically every night, I’ve also been keeping in touch with others too. Quarantine has been interesting in the sense that it kind of shows who actually cares enough to keep in touch with you.

Like I don’t want to be too hard on people because lockdown has been really difficult for a lot of people, but yeah. It’s interesting.

But also, I just really, really miss real school. Staying at home has been an extremely mixed experience, and I miss my friends and socialising with others, especially since a lot of my close friends are seniors. I’m really hoping they get a proper graduation and I want to say bye to them, since I’ll likely never see some of them again, which makes my little heart really sad.

AM CURRENTLY …. BLOGGING FOR A FEMINIST BLOG! (FT. SOCIAL ACTIVISM)

Now, getting into one of the main reasons I basically ghosted. I believe I did talk about this (albeit) briefly in my February wrap up, but it’s basically a gig where I am in charge of running a blog for a teen-run non-profit that focuses on raising awareness for gender-based violence in Thailand.

And … I love it? So much.

Screenshot 2020-05-24 at 11.26.36

Because of corona, the organisation has been running an online campaign since April, so I’ve been extremely busy on that front, especially since I do also help the team to arrange events and such. I have loved working with the team so far, and I’ve generated a lot of content I’m proud of on that front. I honestly don’t know whether I want to link it here yet (because privacy reasons and all, ya feel me), but I am torn because I want to share it, since it’s something I am very proud of and I know that some of my audience are into feminism, so I’ll put a picture of an example here!

But! If you are like one of the five people here who follow my personal Instagram, I scream about it a lot there, so!

This experience has also made me grow a lot in unexpected ways? It made me come to the realisation that conformity/likeability and my passion for social activism (especially gender equality) were things that could co-exist mutually, and that I needed to be less afraid of using my voice to generate change. Which is a realisation that I should’ve come to soon, but I’m glad I came to it.

Yeah, this whole spiel sounds incredibly cheesy, but hey. Growth!

AM CURRENTLY … DOING JUNIOR YEAR THINGS!

So in case you didn’t know, and since I’ve been unable to shut up about it, I’m going to be a rising senior in like July (????), and it’s been a lot, especially since ya girl is now doing a ton of things to prepare for college application season!

Since I like pain I want options, I’ve decided I’m going to apply to at least four (or maybe) more countries, including the US and the UK, and I’ve been just on the grind with higher education-related things, especially for the US (spoiler: it’s so MUCH work). This really started in May, where my school arranged one week exclusively for just getting started with all this stuff – drafting my Personal Statement and Common App Essay, researching universities and stuff. While it was stressful, it was also so helpful, because I have a much clearer idea of what I want and able to eliminate and shortlist places I like, so go me? I guess?

I’ve also been focused on maintaining my extracurriculars and preparing for the ACT. I’m still really upset about how colleges (especially some of my top choices) are making testing compulsory, especially in a pandemic. It just feels so unreasonable and adds so much stress.

And as someone who is not a STEM person – it’s hard. While the English and Reading sections are great, the maths and science sections are the bane!!! of my existence!!! It makes me want to cry everyday. I’m very tired.

AM CURRENTLY WATCHING …

Sex Education (TV Series 2019– ) - IMDb

I don’t know what it was, but I ended up watching so many things over quarantine so far (which unsurprisingly ended up taking a huge toil on my reading). I watched both seasons of Sex Education after some of my friends incessantly told me to, and

Season Seven | Brooklyn Nine-Nine Wiki | Fandom

it was so good? The characters are great, the humour is on-point, and I am very, very attached to the story. (The ending of Season 2 still has me so upset though).

I’ve also been occupied by the release of season 7 of Brooklyn 99, and it is now officially my second favourite season ever. I’m upset that it was only thirteen episodes, but they were all great, so go NBC!

Netflix's The Money Heist Part 4 (Spoiler Free) Review — Reel Anarchy

I’ve also watched a few other things, some of which completely slipped my mind? I watched Money Heist with friends (which was good, but my short attention span meant that it was hard for me to focus on reading the subtitles all the time), The Half of It with another group of friends (which is so well made and diverse and wonderful and ahhh … I love it). I’ve also been continuing Season 9 of Friends with my sister (which is going very slowly) and like one episode of each of Little Fires Everywhere and Tiger King (I’ll probably continuing Little Fires Everywhere, but Tiger King did not capture my attention).
Best for last, though … I ended up rewatching La La Land (which is probably my favourite film ever?) with my sister at 3am, which made me love this film even more? It’s such a 3am film, and it was seriously just such … a religious experience. I’m not joking when I say it’s an absolutely lifechanging experience.

AM CURRENTLY PLAYING …

Kid Krow - Wikipedia

Fine Line (album) - Wikipedia

Mac Miller – Self Care Lyrics | Genius Lyrics

Daddy Issues | The Neighbourhood Wiki | Fandom

In terms of music, quarantine has been a few months of doing a lot of exploration, some of which are listening to things I wouldn’t normally listen to. For albums, I’ve fallen in love with Conan Gray’s Kid Krow and Fine Line by Harry Styles.

Yeah okay … I’m basic but don’t come for me.

I’ve also continued my habit with finding one song by an artist and just getting obsessed with everything an artist has ever done. I’ve been really listening to a bunch of Doja Cat (I … also may have downloaded TikTok as a joke and gotten addicted), Conan Gray, Harry Styles and Peach Tree Rascals. I am also obsessed with Mac Miller’s Self Care and The Neighbourhood’s Daddy Issues. I know they’re both pretty old, but please! listen! to! them! They’re so amazing.

How was the last few months for you? Any favourite things you watched, listened to or found? Bloggers, what were some of your favourite posts this month? Feel free to share.

I would love to know.

I hope you all are safe and doing well in quarantine 💖

  1. Remote schooling is the absolute worst, and I can’t even begin to imagine the nightmare it must be to work on college applications when everything is in total upheaval. Schools are still making the entry testing compulsory?? That’s insane! I wish you the best of luck studying for the ACT, and I know it sounds obvious but my tip is repetition. Since you’re probably set for the English and Reading, focus on doing lots and lots of practice problems for the STEM part.

The Half of It was so good! I watched it with a friend over Netflix Party and it was such fun. Also, I loooove Conan Gray’s Kid Krow! And I’m in the same boat with you with Tik Tok. I downloaded it to be like haha what a joke, and now I’m on it almost every day? It’s a problem. I hope you have a fantastic June! 💕💕

    1. Remote schooling is definitely not the one and college application is a lot right now – it lowkey feels like my life is consumed by the research process. I’m really annoyed that some schools (especially my top choice) are making standardised testing compulsory, and it doesn’t help that a bunch of testing dates just got cancelled 😦 Thank you so much for the tip for maths/science! They’re both causing me so much trouble right now, can’t lie.

And YES The Half of It & Kid Krow are just *chef’s kiss* amazing!! My TikTok addiction is an issue, but junior year is making that less of a problem for me because there’s so much work. It’s okay we can still be addicted together ahaha – I hope you have a great June and please stay safe, Chana!! ❤

and GAH yeah ://// i miss school too? I was meant to be taking my A-levels THIS YEAR… eek… not a vibe having it all cancelled and your grades totally out of your hands ://///
Netflix has been my saviour??? I LOVED SEX EDUCATION!! i nearly watched all of Friends in a week??? ooops. and now that New Girl’s been added??? someone please save my eyes?

loved this!! hope you have a great June!!

    1. ahh thank you so much, lu! you’re really too kind ❤ i had no idea you were in the year above me, damn – i hope you're doing well! it sucks that everything is super weird this year, i hope everything works out for the best! i'm sure you'll get the grades you deserve, even though predicted grades are the worst 😭also (out of pure curiousity), which a levels are you taking? ah YES sex education and friends are great!! i've never watched new girl so i'd be really interested to read your thoughts on it? 👀 but yeah, we do love netflix!

thank you so much for your kind words and i hope you have a safe, great june too (:

      1. I’m alright considering, thanks!! yeah the way they’re assessing them isn’t just predicted grades so they could (and probs will) fluctuate a little bit, but I’m hoping for the best!! I’m (or was) taking history, English lit, and french (I didn’t do an AS)

Oh gosh new girl is hilarious!!! I absolutely love it, it’s great to even just have on in the background!

        thank you sm!! you too!!

      2. I’m hoping for all the best for you, it’ll all work out for the best! Sending hugs 💗 I should defo check out new girl soon! I’m taking eng lit & history too, so that’s really cool to hear! Serious props to you for taking french, because A Level languages are real tough 🤧

        Liked by 1 person

      3. Thank you so much *sends hugs to you too* AHHHHH that’s so cool! what are you studying for History and English??? GOSH FRENCH KILLED ME (because the department was soooo disorganied) even tho I’m half french!!

        Liked by 1 person

      4. I’m studying CIE A Levels, so it’s different from the british curriculum? For history we’re studying the unification of germany/italy & the civil war, reconstruction, the gilded age & the progressive era for AS & the cold war & lenin/hitler for A2. For eng lit i’m currently studying the glass menagerie, but i’ve done frost, short stories, miller and soyinka for AS & i’m also gonna do the winter’s tale, dickinson & the handmaid’s tale for A2. You?
Ahhh i didn’t know you were half french? That’s so cool & i’m sorry to hear about the department being unorganised, hope everything worked out for the best!

        Liked by 1 person

      5. OMG I did the Civil War, Reconstruction, the gilded age and progressive era (and then until 1992) in America!! Wow that sounds way more interesting?? Ohhh I did hand maid’s tale for my coursework with 1984! You’re doing coursework for English too? Wow we did Frankenstein, Never Let Me Go, Streetcar named desire, and Othello and then John Donne poems & a modern poetry anthology! Ahhh yeah it’s all worked out now (that exams are cancelled) I think learning a language at A Level is so much work and they don’t tell you how much more work it is at all aha

        Liked by 1 person

      6. Ahhh that’s so cool that we’re doing the same things!! I did not know our courses lined up that much. I’m not doing coursework for A Levels, unfortunately (other than for calculated grades and all). I can’t wait to study the Handmaid’s Tale in class – I did like it enough when I read it, but I think I’ll like it way more when I study it? I’m not studying Streetcar but I read and watched an adaptation of it and it was interesting for sure! My friend takes A Level French & she says it’s really hard, so go you for taking it!

        Liked by 1 person

      7. YEAH!! (omg no coursework was horrendous be glad you’re not!!) EEEKKK handmaid’s tale was NOT my fave but I hope you love it. AHH love street car!!
good luck to your friend doing French!!!

  3. I’m so happy to be hearing from you again and I’m also glad that you’re safe 🥰 I’m sorry that things have been a bit difficult with online learning and not having as much contact with friends, but I hope everything works out with going to University 😊 It really upsets me as well how inflexible some universities are. I just finished my Bachelor before all this started and am now applying to get my Master Degree, but some of the applications require sooo many documents that are harder to get in this time 😅
It’s also so cool that you’re writing for a Feminist Blog, it sounds like such an incredible experience!!

    1. ahh caro this nearly made me tear up, you’re seriously too good to me 😭🥰thank you for your kind words – they mean so much! ❤ the inflexibility of some universities are so upsetting and frustrating, and i'm sending you the best vibes for applying for your master's! i'm sure it'll all work out amazingly and i hope that unis become more understanding soon 😊 and thank you for being so sweet about the blog – it really is an incredible experience and i'm loving it!

Loved reading this post and look forward to seeing more posts from you!💗

  6. Okay yeah B99 S7 was not long enough but I’m so glad we’re going to have S8; ooh what countries besides US/UK are you thinking about applying to, it’s great that your school thing was helpful even if it was also stressful, it sounds like it would be a useful thing to have. Ahh best of luck for ACT and it sucks about schools not being test-optional. Lockdown’s meant me calling friends a lot too and while online school does suck I guess it wasn’t too bad for me because I was semi-used to working from home. Senior year, ahh exciting but also a bit bittersweet I guess? I hope you’re able to have a proper graduation and hope June and everything afterward goes really well for you!! (Also I absolutely love and admire all your work for the feminist blog! <3)

    Liked by 1 person

    1. i’m still mad that b99 s7 was only 13 episodes ahhh (the episodes were all excellent and i cannot wait for season 8!) i’m looking at applying to a uni in singapore and china each, and perhaps looking at canada/netherlands too? i’m trying to keep my options as open as possible while still sticking to the app limit that my school has. thank you so much for your well wishes for the ACT; same for you with the SAT! (i know you’ll have no trouble getting the scores you want though, your scores are already legendary ahh). i hope you and your loved ones are doing well in lockdown and that everything is going well in nz 💖it sucks that your senior year is going wack and i hope that you get to have a proper graduation and all! i’m not graduating until june 2021, so hopefully things will be back to a (semi)-normal with graduation and uni by then? i hope you have an amazing june and thank you for all your support and kind words, i am not deserving 😭 i love you so so much 🥰

      Liked by 1 person

      1. s8 is going to be amazing!! and ah nice that sounds super cool, you have an app limit?! but thank you!! ❤ and ah hope you're doing well too, we don't actually have graduation anyway it's just senior prizegiving I guess which is a sort of awards ceremony for y11-13. and ahh ily2 ❤ ❤

        Liked by 1 person

      2. I can’t wait for Season 8 & i hope it isn’t delayed too 😔 yep, my school has an app limit of 10 applications (i can apply to more than 10 schools but i can only fill out 10 forms, if that makes sense?), because they don’t want us going overboard and losing our minds over college app season! Ahh, senior prize giving sounds super cute & i hope things go back to normal soon ❤

        Liked by 1 person

      3. Yeah, for real though! So basically we can apply to 10 schools, but multiple schools that use one application (e.g UCs) count as one? It’s weird but i guess it was put in place so we don’t overapply and stress ourselves out, basically

        Liked by 1 person

      4. Ohh okay, yeah how would they even track that except I guess having to send transcripts etc, I’m probably gonna try apply to around ten bc I think otherwise I’ll just end up spending money applying to schools I wouldn’t actually go to and yeah

        Liked by 1 person

      5. They definitely will keep track of that ahahah, but I do appreciate how that number will make it that I have to be very picky with my schools! Totally in the same boat as you with spending money – I’m only interested in applying to places I would truly love and see myself going to, especially as an international student.

        Liked by 1 person

      6. Haha yeah I think ten is a reasonable limit though it will definitely feel a bit restrictive I think, and yes absolutely; especially for me if it’s not sounding better than the option I already have then there’s zero point paying way more to go overseas!

  7. taasia! it’s so nice hearing from you again, even though i am late to this post, heheh.
i am glad that despite the bad things happening, some still worked out for you, like being able to focus on your favorite subjects! i also had such a short time in college this semester. i had two weeks of classes in march and then in the 15th, everything shut down, and i haven’t been back since, lol. it’s kinda weird thinking how little i actually *lived* for the past months.
i am really glad that you’re still keeping up with your friends! i feel like it’s been very easy for me to just isolate myself during these weeks, and it’s definitely not the best for your mental health.
and it’s sososooooo cool what you’re doing in that blog!!! social activism is so important and i’m really glad you found a passion there! 💛
wishing you all the luck with college preparation and a great june!

It seems like the last few months were really stressful for you, and I’m really sorry 🥺 I’m wishing you all the luck with college apps and junior year things ❤ Also, it's so cool that you're running a feminist blog! The work you're doing is so important. we stan.
I watched season one of Money Heist during quarantine too! The show made me so stressed omg. I really wanna watch the second season so that I know how the heist ends, but I'm scared because I vividly remember how scared I was at some points while watching the show lol. and I'm so sad that I'm not caught up with B99 anymore 😭 I used to religiously watch it, but then I stopped and now idk where I did, haha. I don't have much time for TV shows right now, but I'll probably watch season 7 when I'm in need of a laugh. I'm so happy you weren't disappointed with it!!

    1. Caitlin, this comment is going to make me cry nooo 😭❤ I missed you and your posts so much too! I really hope you’re doing okay right now in the hecticness of everything ❤ We absolutely stan you in this house! Money Heist is truly stressful to watch but it’s entertaining despite me having the attention span of a 2 year old 💀 The later seasons of B99 are a lot shorter so like it won’t be too slow if you do pick up where you left off, tbh. Season 7 is only 13 episodes, so do with that what you will! I hooe you enjoy it when you see it ❤

    1. Ahh May, you are too kind!! It’s just junior year/rising senior things, really 😦 Best of luck with your prep for the SAT, it was such a pain for me that I ended up switching entirely to the ACT 😭 I didn’t know you were a junior too, sending you my supoort and love ❤ Okay, so everyone and their mother loves avatar and it makes me want to watch it? I’ve never heard of Rina Sawayama before, what recs do you have of hers? 👀

      Liked by 1 person

      1. i’m a rising junior, i’m baby haha!! but also yeah the act just scares me more because i cannot do science so i figured sat was the better bet. YES watch atla and oh! my favorite songs from her are xs (which is her most popular), akasaka sad, and tokyo love hotel, and then for ones not from her most recent album: 10-20-40, take me as i am, and cherry!

      2. Ahh best of luck with junior year, it’s absolutely wild! The ACT science is torture right now so I get what you’re saying, but the reading aspect of it has me hopeful for that improvement 🤞 the SAT was a painful experience for me, but i hope it all works out for you! I will watch ATLA when I actually start watching TV again (💀) & YES i’ll check the recs out, thank you ❤
