Ya girl is back with wrapping up her June TBR and showing off her TBR for July!
If you saw my June wrap-up, you know that June was my best reading month of all time (in terms of quantity), but it was not my best month in terms of me actually reading from my TBR. (yikes).
And I’m not that mad about it? Because I read some pretty hefty books, and while I wish I read more queer books, I think I read a pretty solid amount!
So after all that chaos, July is gonna be a pretty chill reading month, and I’m honestly so excited about it. I don’t think I’m going to read that much especially in the second half of the month, because I just found out that I am going to be doing a whole lot of travelling this month (to Hong Kong, Malaysia, and China!) and next month too.
I also feel tired (and feeling a bit of reading burnout), and want to slow down my reading a little and to allow for some mood reading.
Thus in July, I am going to list a few books that I want to read but allowing myself to mood read to my heart’s content (with me mainly trying to catch up or to surpass some of my reading challenges, especially Year of the Asian, as well as catch up on all my anticipated releases).
I will be reading at my own pace, and honestly? That sounds ideal. I took 4 days to finish a book (rather than my usual 2-3) and I feel fantastic about it.
And I’ve already read/currently reading/about to pick up a few of these, and I’ll note where that is the case as well as jot down a few of my thoughts.
Also! If anyone wants to buddy read any of these books (or honestly, anything), please let me know, because I’d love to do a few this month!

July TBR
New Releases:
I have an anticipated releases of the second half of the year coming up (albeit very late due to the sheer amount of content I have planned) that will go into more detailed about these titles, so stay tuned for that!
(And yes, all of these have already come out. Please bear with me and my lateness, yikes).
- The Best Lies by Sarah Lyu (2nd)
- A “quiet YA” psychological thriller featured a well-done toxic friendship, coupled with some great reviews from reviewers that I trust? I’m so here for this.
- Spin the Dawn by Elizabeth Lim (9th)
- I was blessed enough to read and review this as part of the blog tour, but I need an excuse to feature this beauty again. For all you all who haven’t read it, consider this a reminder to.
- Maybe This Time by Kasie West (9th)
- I love Kasie West, and seeing event planning in YA contemporary. This sounds like the ideal summer contemporary that I need in my life. Kasie, please don’t let me down.
Hauled Books:
In June and the first few days of July, I took a few trips down to the library and the bookstore and came out with some beauties that I would really like to complete, especially since the library books have to be returned by the end of July. I am pretty excited to read all of these, honestly.
Unread books:
- Kingsbane by Claire Legrand
- I already finished this and this was just as amazing as I expected.
- Finale by Stephanie Garber
- I really enjoyed the Caraval series (though I’m salty about the disappointment of Legendary). I’ve heard great things about this one, so I hope it’s good.
- Empress of All Seasons by Emiko Jean
- This has been on my Year of the Asian priority TBR, and I should probably get to it soon.
- We Hunt The Flame by Hafsah Faizal
- West Asian fantasies are so rare, and I’ve heard some great things about this one!
- Alex, Approximately by Jenn Bennett
- I was originally meant to buddy read this with Marie @ Drizzle and Hurricane Books in June, but it ended up not working out. I may end up buddy reading this with her in the next few months (maybe in July?), but I’m not sure yet.
Read Books:
These are books that I already have read and loved, and are books that I borrowed out from the library for a reread. It would be cool to reread these, but I’ll only do it if I’m in the mood for them. If I don’t get to these, I won’t exactly cry about it.
- Darius the Great Is Not Okay by Adib Khorram
- My favourite book of the year. I cried too many times while reading this one.
- Summer Bird Blue by Akemi Dawn Bowman
- An honourary favourite of the year! This was so lovely, and warmed my heart while breaking it. An absolutely phenomenal story.
Do you do TBRs? If so, how did you do on your TBR last month? What are some of your most anticipated releases for this month, and some books that you are dying to get to in July?
I would love to know!
I hope you get to all of them! And enjoy them of course!

I usually set TBRs for myself but don’t post them on my blog because I KNOW I do a terrible job sticking to them! I’m also such a mood reader so my TBRs have a ridiculous amount of books, that way I can say that I checked ~some~ of them off lol. Have fun traveling this month!

Ahhh that honestly makes sense! Being a major mood reader and everything you said about is so relatable, honestly! And thank you for your kind words, and I hope you have a lovely July!

legendary was probably my favourite of the series…i gave finale 2 stars. i am still desperately in love with the world but i was just disappointed about so many things, and the ending…and it just didn’t meet my expectations. the book just felt SO messy on the whole, and just rushed?? idk but i was expecting so much more!! i’m so glad you loved spin the dawn, i’m really excited for it since so many friends loved it ❤

AHH YES I have been absolutely terrible about our buddy read, I’m so sorry! I forgot to come back to you once I was back from my holidays / small hiatus and… well to be honest with you I feel like it’s going to be a bit short until my next hiatus (which will come by in two weeks now) and ahhh I’m so sorry I’ve been so terrible 😭😭😭 feel free to go ahead without me if you’d like to read it this July or early August, or maybe we can make it work after mid-August if you’d still like to? I AM SO SORRY I am such a terrible buddy reader 😭
I really really really hope to read Spin The Dawn soon, it sounds like such an incredible read and I can’t wait to be able to get a copy myself! AND DARIUS ah I need this book in my life as well ❤
I hope you're having a lovely reading month so far and once again I'm so sorry ahh 😭

i relate a lot to reading a bunch but not exactly from your TBR and therefore feeling a bit unaccomplished? this month, i’ve already sneaked two books that weren’t part of my TBR, which is good, because they’re still nice books nonetheless, but i also look at my TBR and the fact i haven’t checked that many books and feel bad. so, yeah, same, hahah.
but hopefully we’ll both beat our TBRs this month, even if i clearly have more books set there than you do this month. happy reading, taasia! 😊

i feel so relieved that i’m not the only one who feels that way, honestly! i literally sneak so many books that aren’t on my TBR, it’s absolutely ridiculous. Best of luck on your TBR, and hopefully we can crush our TBRs together! Happy reading, Lais!

Taasia, ahh IWYATB was so so good and cute! It’s sad that weren’t able to get to it but I hope you do soon! Also, same, I am so excited to read Hungry Hearts haha. I would also love to buddy read WHTF with you hehe

Ahhh yes, I really need to try IWYATB! I tried reading a little bit of it in June but I couldn’t really get into the writing style, but I still want to give it a shot. Hungry Hearts is honestly everything I need in my life, I’m so excited for it that I could scream. And yes, I totally would love to buddy read WHTF together! I need more motivation to read it and that is the perfect motivator! 😊

same, i encountered that problem as well at the beginning of IWYATB, and I found myself having to reread a lot of sentences in the beginning. however, the story really is such an overall win, and it’s definitely a reading experience that I’ll keep close to my heart. and i think it’s a testament to CW, Vicky, and the participants of the food crawl’s skills that I initially wasn’t at all interested in the book, but then I read everyone’s posts and I got so convinced that I just had to read it!
same, it’s one of my most anticipated releases of the year, and I still haven’t gotten to it sigh. I need a motivator as well :’)

ahh i’ll definitely keep that in mind, caitlin! i’ll have to bump it up my TBR, and maybe audiobook it! CW, Vicky & all of the bloggers that were in the food crawl was excellent! I hope you love it! When do you want to schedule this buddy read?

Yes, I think the audiobook would be perfect to combat the weird writing style! I think that other than the fact that I just had to keep rereading sentences, the book would’ve been fine. Also, ughhh, beware that school has really started to become stressful nowadays so I’ll probably be a really bad buddy reader :(( What do you say to next week’s Friday? I think I could try to speed through the book throughout the weekend!

Hopefully it works out! Finding an affordable copy of the audio is gonna be really hard though (intl reader things) :(( i can’t do next week’s friday unfortunately, because i’m on vacation at that time! i’ll be free from the 29th to the 2nd, before travelling again, so are you free during those times? I hope you’re doing good and that the stress ceases!

Yes! That’s fine with me haha. And I totally get the intl reader problem :((

OOooo I’m listening to the audiobook for Ghosts of the Shadow Market!! How did you enjoy it? I think it’s pretty good so far, and I’m really excited for you to read Maybe This Time this month too~ I started it last night, and I’m already feeling the wonderful Kasie West cuteness 😍

Ghosts of the Shadow Market was generally pretty solid! It’s my favourite short story anthology so far, and I LOVED the last two stories! I really liked some of the other ones and was bored to death by some of the others, so my experience was pretty varied! UGH highkey jealous that you get to listen via audio! The narrators are A++ 😩 I hope you enjoy it! I just finished Maybe This Time this morning (I pulled an all nighter to finish it) and I really liked it! One of the best Kasie West books I’ve read – I loved the plot structure, the characters were solid and it was SO cute. I hope you’re loving it! Happiest of reading, Tiffany!

Ooh, I’m so excited to see your thoughts on We Hunt the Flame!! I have a Feeling you’re not going to love it (for some reason, I don’t know why!), but I started out being so bored by it and wanting to put it down, and then ending up loving it, so what do I know haha. And ah, you’re in for a WILD ride with Empress of All Seasons — I still have no idea what happened at the end lmao. I hope you get to read all that you want to this month, Taasia! 💗

I’m really interested to see what I think about it too! I initially wasn’t really interested because it sounded really tropey and then I heard all those good things – and I’m really curious. So glad you loved it though! I can’t wait to pick up Empress of All Seasons (like, Asian fantasy with tournaments? YES). Thank you for your well wishes and I hope you get to read all the amazing books in July too, May! 💖
